What a day! It was way beyond what we could have imagined….

When we were preparing for the launch of Qik on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, we had anticipated significant growth as the device was just so great along with the 4G network. But even the significant growth assumptions were not enough and we are seeing some unprecedented number of new users joining and Qikking. It truly is beyond what we had imagined.

Earlier in the day we ran into a snag with Qik for HTC EVO 4G not being visible in the Android Market from the HTC EVO 4G devices – even though it was published to the market. Hats off to our great partner Google. Their Android team jumped in, found the issue and came up with a workaround that enabled us to at least get the new Qik Video client out to our users.

We had an unprecedented 20X the amount of workload on our servers. As a result, you were seeing issues connecting to our service on and off. So, our team is now out provisioning more capacity and we expect to have this in control shortly. We feel bad that not all of you got a chance to experience the new Qik Video today and truly appreciate your patience. Rest assured we are not going to rest till this is humming and you are able to video chat with your friends and loved ones.

Update July 8:  If you’ve just gotten your Sprint HTC EVO 4G and are looking for Qik’s Video Chat capabilities, please download Qik for HTC EVO 4G app from the Android Market.

Our salute goes to our great partners:
  • Sprint for firstly bringing such an amazing device to the market and then working with us through these initial glitches
  • Google for jumping in right away and helping us resolve the issues associated with Qik not being visible on the Android Market on HTC EVO 4G.
If you have any questions – we are always here and can be reached via support@qik.com.

Resolved issues in Android Marketplace?? As of when? It is still not showing in MarketPlace.

  2. broy says:

We have unpublished the client from the Android Market till the time we are able to resolve the other issues.

  3. kelsnotchels says:

Thank you for your hard work, and THANK you for communicating the issues with all of your new EVO customers.

We're ready when you are! Keep up the good work. :D

  4. Roy says:

Will the update also fix the double icon issue where the update does not hide the original Qik app included with the EVO?

  5. Jenny Larson says:

What a ridiculous statement… 20x more load then expected. Is that a joke or just incredibly bad planning? Seriously, 20x only directs people to your failures.

  6. Brule says:

I was able to download a new version – 0.04.03 and its a blue icon… still have the Orange one as well. I don't have video chat features. What am I missing?

  7. slimmdizzo says:

i got tha blue and and orange icon as well but no video chat options i can do everything else this morning my qik wouldnt even contact 2 a network thinkin it was my phone the sprint rep had me do a master reset im so disappointed i brought this phone solely on speed and tha video chat and rite now im not impress that all these problems are arising after it releases

  8. danny says:

i dont understand how you can say you “prepared for it” preparation should've involved finding out how many devices will be in stores for the actual launch. that shouldve been more than enough information to get your servers ready. I understand that its a big work load but still how can you expect your customers to pay your “premium fee” when you can even get the free service to work as expected on launch. Its a great app but its not TRUE VIDEO CHAT, I completely dislike having to press the talk button its annoying and completely unlike skype. Remove that feature make it a true video call instead of video PTT its not as advertised.

  9. Brad says:

You should just download the Fring app from the Market. Not to hate on the Qik website about Qik but Fring also lets you connect to Skype users. It is really stable (quality on 3G is choppy but 4G and WiFi is awesome). I have been using it for the last week and it rocks! Qik is not going to be an option if it is just limited to the Qik client. I have also noticed that Fring is NOT a battery killer running in the background.

  10. Brad says:

Please take into account that we all want connectivity to other chat clients like Skype. To be a true video phone client you have to integrate with Skype! Now that is something that I would pay a premium for……

  11. broy says:

Please reboot your phone to remove the older icon. The video chat capability has not yet been published as we are still working through the issues.

  12. broy says:

Please reboot your phone to remove the orange icon.

  13. broy says:

Brad – great suggestion and something we'll be taking into consideration.

  14. Brule says:

I rebooted. Still have both icons. any eta on video chat?

  15. Roy says:

I did reboot and both icons are still there Broy….

  16. broy says:

Hmmm…can you try 1 more thing. Power off, remove the battery, wait a few secs and then power on again. Regarding Video Chat – we are still working towards enabling that capability.

  17. broy says:

Is the blue icon version 04.03? If so – that's not the version that will have video chat. When we publish the video chat version it will replace the orange icon.

  18. Roy says:

I believe thats the version I have. I'll just wait until you guys re-release the correct version and hopes it “hides” the Qik version on the ROM

  19. Jenny Larson says:

    OMG – PTT, seriously???

  20. James says:

qik isnt available only for the EVO. when i got my evo, my wife got qik though she doesnt have an EVO. thats how its possilbe for them to have 20x users. people tell people and they sign up. granted they should have foreseen this. Im sure they tried their best to be prepared

  21. James says:

I have trouble viewing the flash from the qik website in the browser and also cant view shared video from other users. are these common problems with the blue icon version?

  22. james says:

browser on the evo that is…

  23. retardedqikmanagement says:

Qik in touch is garbage worthless. Where is the video chat capability there?? Seriously. No one would ever be at your site without android video chat. What is this not your top priority?!?!

Qik in touch – START A VIDEO CHAT BUTTON. No one wants to chat by text while viewing a live video ONE WAY.

Qik app – START VIDEO CHAT BUTTON. Why is the process so nonintuitive??? Did you hand the phone to strangers and ask them to start a video chat before now?!?! If you did, you'd have got the same blank stares as all the users on your site….all asking how to start a video chat.

Make the process clear. Make it so that my grandmother, who doesn't video chat by cell phone and never will, can talk back and forth using the qik client.

    “START VIDEO CHAT”
Everything else is secondary. You are trying to compete against youtube with a live feed add-on, instead of the other way around. Make VIDEO CHAT easy from every single device (including computer!)

  24. danny says:

i love fring lol i use it all the time…anyone else notice how the qik app force closes when u get a phone call at times? another FAIL on qiks end…..sprint shame on you for choosing qik you should've made a different contract with skype as in allowing video chat since no phone on verizon can do it

  25. danny says:

yes there is a talk button that you have to hold down while you want to talk…it sucks

  26. danny says:

you guys had plenty of time to do it AND all the google i/o phones would've definitely been PERFECT beta testers. whoever is in charge of this project should lose their job you promised a working app on “launch” and had the perfect people to test to ensure your servers can handle the load but guess what you were wrong…..DEVELOPERS!

take a long look at fring and say wow what a great app

  27. JaimeM26 says:

I finally had it working last night with the blue icon and about an hour ago I received a notification for an update and that reverted me back to the old orange version with no video chat. Very frustrating.

  28. Chris says:

Jeez…cut them a little slack. It's a friggin FREE PROGRAM. It cost you nothing. They are human and this was a large scale deal here. Sure, they got caught with their pants down, but they're trying to pull 'em back up you guys keep yankin' 'em back down. They'll get it right. Just give them some time.

  29. danny says:

hey fring is a free program too that worked BEFORE launch, the fact that they advertised their company FOR THIS PHONE tells you that they just want money and not a user friendly experience. I even got the app to work and they decided to release an “update” that took away the ability to even work. On top of that its not true video chat! its PTT! So don't ask us to cut them slack when someone had it right before they did. QIK get it right you got a spot on the box for this sole purpose and you can't even deliver 3 days into launch. FAIL

  30. AndrewH says:

This is extremely disappointing as this was a featured application for use with the HTC EVO 4G, This is a major failure on the part of Qik for not being prepared for the onslaught with at least temporary measures to ensure a smooth launch. As a potential customer and EVO owner this is not a very good first step when wanting to recruit paying customers to this service.

  31. THIS SUCKS says:

You are not connected to qik server! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Jay says:

Just got my evo on friday.. Qik stopped working on Sat. : Everytime I try to launch Qik it crashes and i still dont see it in the Android Market.

  33. Tukas says:

    Oh Noes! Re-boot, re-boot!

  34. TJ says:

I'm with Brad. For this to be truly successful it needs to connect to other chat clients like Skype, Google chat etc.

  35. Jesus people, stop the H8 on Qik, Issues like this happen all the time. Simply put HTC, sprint and Qik came up with an amazing device and features that hit on a good note with the public.

it's like the Gulf Crisis, no one saw it coming. but a fix in underway!

Qik team, best of luck, I have pre ordered my Evo and can't wait to use your App for when i go to EDC Los Angeles and share it with all my friends!

  36. superchicken says:

    FRING is master

  37. Miguel says:

I get the HTC Evo on Friday and just started playing with the Qik app, which came preinstalled by the way. I do not see any options for video chat or half of the things that you claim should be in the app in your FAQs. What gives? Not a very good way to bring your new product to market.

  38. John J. Barry says:

Got my Evo on day 1 and love it when will Qik Video Chat be available?

  39. John J. Barry says:

Well I just read through the comments and I side with the GET IT TOGETHER crowd! As usual over promise and under deliver is the American way!!! How you guys could not have seen this coming is amazing!

  40. Lawrence Aron says:

    Sorry, guys.

I appreciate the difficulty in getting things prepared for a major release…but that's your job.

Also, your “aw, shucks” blase attitude is inappropriate and outrageous. You were caught unprepared for something that was in the works for months…perhaps years. Fring came in and stole your thunder, and you deserved it.

You let HTC, Google, Sprint and–most tragically–your customers–down on an otherwise great day.

Get your act together. Now. Then make sure the IT executive in charge of this disaster is out of work by month's end. Don't dare put the blame on individual contributor developers, who are undoubtedly working beacoup overtime to help mitigate the trust–and market share–you've squandered.

Who knows? You might get by with more than you've shown you deserve.

  41. Brian says:

So, finally got the Video Chat up. Now I see the Mic button, that is pretty disappointing. And didn't work well at all. I tried to call my wife (we both got EVOs, for this very reason) 6 times. One time we heard each other but it was very choppy, and we had to keep repeating our selves. So we called back a couple times, sometimes she would answer and my camera wouldn't turn on, and vice versa, and then both our cameras worked pretty well on try number 5, and we just pantomimed with each other for a couple minutes. Then we tried a 6th time, and her camera froze up, and the mics didn't work at all. Just giving some feedback. I still have 3 weeks left before I can return the EVO and switch to go iPhone.

  42. Flavia says:

my QIK application does not let me start a video chat, why is that? I can only use it to record a video and share it, although it is asking me to insert a SD card

  43. Juan Leal says:

what a shame you guys screwed us up like this, seriously this is the shyt that gives apple the lead. qik do the world askype and leave it to the professionals favor sell your company to

  44. Luke says:

    1. Notice that the live page is mostly people testing their phones not knowing that they are being live recorded on the internet! It's retarded.

    2. The phones shipped with the wrong version of of the program. You messed up. you should have had the proper version out on time. Most people are not going to know how to update it or how to get their phones to do video chat because there are no instructions with the phone that explain it, even though it says you can do it on the EVOs box.

  45. Dai Truong says:

QIK is no good. Guy word of mouth spreads fast so you really need to improve the user experience the customer support and product. Just got my EVO and excited about Video Chat. I just installed the QIK for EVO created account, etc. Lots of bugs on this. When I post to Facebook, it does not post the title I typed in on the QIK client on my EVO. Also when I tap on Video Chat in the client, it says I need to be verified HOWEVER when it redirects me to my account on the web, my number is already registered. BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY. Bad user experience and would not recommend to anyone. Doomed.

  46. Brian says:

This is how it is supposed to work:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/facetime.h…

    1) Its supposed to work
    2) Why is my image so large on the screen. I want to see the other person I called
    3) Why are my video calls being recorded to your server? I don't want to the world invading my phone calls. (Or is Obama one of your employees?)
    4) Why a Mic to talk button?
    5) Why isn't there an integrated button on my contacts, so that I don't have to go to the Qik app, and search for the number?

  47. Dan Schwartz says:

Two salient questions relating to using Qik for the deaf, Deaf/ASL (American Sign Language) and non-verbal communities:

    1) Is there an option to turn OFF the audio to save bandwidth? Sprint has their special SprintLink http://www.SprintLink.com division where reduced rate data-only plans can be purchased;

    2) Will the official VRS (Video Relay Service) providers have software to connect to Qik on Evo users? See i711.com/Purple at http://www.purple.us and Sorenson Communications at http://www.sorenson.com for an explanation of VRS calling.

    Thank you!
