Droid does Qik!

Our eyes popped a few weeks back when we first learned about the powerful Motorola Droid and the potential it has with its amazing camera. We set out to enhance our Android client to not just have the basic Droid and Android 2.0 support – but also showcase the power of the device. Today we are really excited to announce that no only can you download the Qik client from the Android Marketplace that supports Droid, but also request early beta access to a high-res Qik client for Droid that can capture videos in DVD resolution.

Share your experiences in DVD resolution
With this device we are raising the bar on quality – yet again! Qik for Droid can now capture of DVD resolution (720×480) video – first ever by any live mobile video provider. If you are interested in giving this beta version a try send an email to droidbeta@qik.com

Sharing gets more personal with improved Speed Sharing Ribbon

The Qik Speed Sharing Ribbon(TM) makes it easy to share what you are seeing with your friends. You can create shortcuts to select contacts from your phone and place them in the Speed Sharing Ribbon so that the next time you Qik you can share your Qiks with them with just a tap on the screen. You can even record your Qiks as private and share them privately just by selecting a person from the Speed Sharing Ribbon. Also, you can setup your sharing preferences for your favorite social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube right from the phone and have them appear on the Speed Sharing Ribbon enabling you to share your Qiks with ease.

So, equip your new Droid device with Qik by downloading it from the Android Marketplace and let us know what you think by sending an email to android@qik.com.

The integration with Livestream from HTC Hero should work. Can you send an email to support@qik.com with the details on what is happening along with your livestream channel information?

but the streaming worked well even from 0.5 miles out in the ocean!

  14. Ben says:

Amazing… The still camera blows, but the video quality is superb for a phone. Imagine the applications. Video conferencing via DROID is a possibility!!! This phone does everything!

  15. drunknbass says:

  20. Steve Isaacs says:

I'm using the beta (thanks BTW) with my DROID but am not getting ANY results even close to the one seen in the example. Here's a sample: http://qik.ly/qM77

Any advice? Is there a setting I'm somehow missing?

  21. Jestexman says:

    Email sent also.

  22. Laura says:

Just remember verizons data plan agreement states:

The Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a month.”

basically verizon is stating we can not stream from qik…so be careful

this is great I work for Verizon and I am telling all of my friends, family, and co-workers. Perfect app for life's great moments. I was able to stream my wife's 1st race to her mom real time an super clear. Loving it.

  25. broy says:

To get better quality – try keeping the phone in a stable place or holding it stable manner.

  26. sailouterbanks says:

Works great but my droid can't playback the saved file on the phone.

  27. broy says:

To playback the video go to your profile page (http://qik.com/yourusername) from the browser on the Droid.

  28. jestexman says:

Using Droid Beta I shot a few videos since i installed the beta and came to the site to check them out only to find out that all 3 of them have been made into one video. Any ideas Jestexman

  29. broy says:

Seems like a bug. Can you send support@qik.com the link to the video?

  30. jestexman says:

    Email sent

  31. Jesse says:

Qik is an awesome app but I really can't tell a difference from the beta (HD) version from the original on my droid. I would say its hardly HD quality. Definitely looks nothing like the the sample video.

  32. dechral says:

How do I change the settings on my droid to hd? Currently there is no difference in the qik output compared to the normal video.

  33. Steve Isaacs says:

They say the beta app only shoots in HD, there's no setting, but like you I don't see any difference. Wish Qik would address this question…

  34. broy says:

This is our first app in beta that records at such a high resolution, but resolution is only part of the picture (pun intended!). Another big part of the overall quality is the bit-rate (how much information is sent per second to create the moving image), and this is where your own actions can go a long way in improving the video. Unlike traditional media like a DVD, cell phones are very constrained in how much data they can send, and having large areas of motion within a video is particularly data-intensive. The simpler the scene and the less motion the phone needs to deal with, the sharper the overall picture will be. Holding the camera very steady helps a lot, as does having good lighting. If you really want the very best quality possible, try setting the phone down (obviously not always an option, but the resulting image can be amazing).

  35. broy says:

This way too cool!! Am going to put this link up on our Facebook fan page (http://facebook.com/qik)

  36. krayzee says:

Uhm i have the beta and mine doesn't look like that either?

  37. jvorves says:

    Verrrryy Cool app.
Loving the capabilities of my new Droid!

  38. Filippo says:

Hi, the application is not currently available for the HTC Tattoo, I guess because it does not explicitly support qvga. Can you please fix that?
    Many thanks!

  39. broy says:

You can download the version on the Android Market for HTC Tattoo. Unfortunately Tattoo does not support this high resolution video and hence the beta is not applicable for that device.

  40. adoneys says:
