Well, there’re a number of rumors flying around that the 2-way Qik mobile video service will require a premium subscription. We wanted to clarify what that really means. Firstly, rest assured that the core Qik service that lets you communicate live from your phone to other phones, web and desktop will be FREE. Yes – this means that the core capability of doing 2-way Qik video chat will be FREE for Sprint EVO 4G users. The subscription fee will be for some advanced premium features that we are working on, which we will be announcing on June 4th – the day the amazing HTC EVO 4G phone launches.
So, tune back in on June 4th for a complete list of features of the new Qik along with the optional advanced premium features for you to enjoy!
Only problem is like most companies stating something is FRE is total BS! Sprints $69.99 everything 350 plan does not cover the EVO, they have said it would have to be $10.00 extra for the added features of the EVO. Been with thenm for 11 years but thinking of changing because they are getting to be no better than the other services of nickle and diming you .
Could have sworn I saw the 4.99 in writing in more than one place…nice to see that Qik realized that they infuriated the entire nerd world with that little greedy ploy.
I think the damage is done, and I know many people who are now leaving Sprint, or sticking with their inferior iPhone on AT&T simply because Sprint and Qik both have stated things that simply were lies.
Sorry Qik, but I know that you will never get me to use your service on any phone in the future.
Remember, if you have to do some PR work to address “rumors” then the rumors were true, and your image is already screwed.
Thank you, Qik! I'm very happy to hear this, and I'm excited to see what the premium features are
considering that $79.99 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the iPhone on AT&T and most every all inclusive plans out there, I'm not even sweating the $10.00. So I'll skip lunch one day a week at work. No biggie at all
It was in print someplace. What that failed to do was clarify that it was for the optional premium features.
Really sorry to hear that. What I can say for sure that there were no lies in this area. It seemed like it was called out in print someplace – but what that failed to clarify was that it was for the optional premium features.

You made a big huge mistake and charging people is not gonna fly. I mean, you have the right to try, but we have the right to leave, too. There's fring, there's Bambuser, there's Ustream – it's just a matter of time for them to add two-way video if they don't have it yet, so, bad karma for you, guys! Bad, bad karma! Tomorrow you may decide to start charging for the basic features. The damage has been done and you cannot reverse it! You're as evil as Skype turned to be doing nasty carrier schemes. Sorry, I'm switching completely to Bambuser now!
Appreciate someone trying to rectify some misunderstandings, however in an economic climate like this, retaining “brand loyalty” is unlikely once a consumer has been alienated and finds many other options that are similar. Qik is not as fluid as other existing VoIP or Video Chat providers, so to see the underdog actually shoot themselves really solidifies my decision to use another carrier that offers free video.
I know that due to Sprint's comments on their 4G plans being less then current 3G plans, which also was a lie in print and verbal state, I have decided to boycott the EVO and use another Android phone that is just as capable of similar features. In that sense, my brand loyalty to them is diminished and because of this, I will no longer sign a 2 year agreement or buy phones from them. That hits their bottom line.
It's $10 if you are in a 4G enabed area, and this will most likely apply to any 4G phone that Sprint comes out with. You are paying for the ability to use the 4G network, I don't see anything wrong with that. It would be nice if you could opt out of paying the extra 4G fee and have your phone use 3G all the time, but, like Apple, HTC and Sprint don't want users to have a lesser experience with a phone that was built to take advantage of higher speeds, so they'd rather make sure everyone can have the same experience and not have people complaining their phone is slow or can't watch HD video and fail to mention they didn't want to pay the extra $10 a month. Sprint's plans are already very competitive in my opinion, $10 more is not too bad. And if you have a corporate discount (like many people on Sprint do) you can pay less.
I'm going to take a guess and say, reading and comprehension are not your strong-suit.

Sprint has stated it is NOT for 4G or 4G enabled areas only. It is a Premium Data Add-On that is REQUIRED to have the phone. This is for 3G or 4G.
Look up John Taylor or jbtaylor on Twitter – he is a PR rep for Sprint and his blog actually states what the $10.00 charge is for and that is is mandatory for any and all EVO phones regardless of usage or network speed.
Then guessing is not your strong suit. “Premium” is highly subjective and is a clear precursor for Qik getting in bed with carriers just like Skype did.
BTW, did you hear that Sprint is limiting Google Voice on HTC EVO 4G? That's the kinda nasty games I'm afraid of! The more companies like Skype and Qik prostitute with carriers, the more carriers would be tempted to try to abuse consumers! It's clear that carriers are desperately trying to postpone as much as possible turning themselves into dumb pipes.
What do you men “for Evo users?” are their going to be NON Evo users?
Hi, you say “free” for Evo users… Does that imply there will be “NON” Evo users?
Go AWAY!!! You're made of BS. Sprint is not limited Google voice.

You are wrong yet again. You say Sprint has stated, yet you provide to link or source. And I know directly from Sprint, because my best friend works for them, that the $10 extra is for a “Premium Data Add-On,” which the “premium” feature is the 4G itself. Sprint is charging you that extra $10 a month because there's nothing stopping somebody from traveling somewhere that has 4G service and using it. So, they require that extra $10 a month in case you happen to ever be in a 4G area. It still is a better deal than any other carrier's plans and I don't mind paying a extra $10. I pay over $100 a month for service through AT&T and nothing is unlimited… not even text or weekend minutes, so switching is a no-brainer.
