First is live video chat on the go!

Very cool commercial from Sprint featuring the Evo and Qik.   Live video chat on the go over 4G, 3G or wifi networks.  Live streaming to the web.  (And that’s just skimming the surface of what Qik can do!)

Surf’s up (or down)!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Qikker Manabu Tokunaga, aka Stokemaster, uses Qik to report waves to his surfing followers.

One of his key points of his surf reports is “Know Before You Don’t Go”. Most other surf reports are of good surfing shots, while Manabu focuses on live reporting, especially when conditions are poor.

He will Qik his surf report, so that anyone who follows him on Qik, Twitter and Facebook will know whether it is worth going all the way to Half Moon Bay area to surf that day. Manabu says, “Many people drive miles and hours to find the surf and often wasting both gas and time, not to mention increasing the CO2 emission!  My reports have so far spared hundreds of miles of wasted driving and tons of CO2.”

Manabu has been Qikking his way through Qik on iPhone 4′s blue period, and when he finally got the Qik Video Camera Pro that is now compatible with his phone, jokingly says “There are other people who are telling me that they are going to miss my artistic purple video, but looks like there are all sorts of modes on this so I will confuse them from time to time by doing these cool modes!”

He also hopes to someday have a waterproof 3G camera phone at his disposal so he can broadcast live from the surf lineup!

For San Francisco/Bay Area surfers, you can follow Stokemaster on www.qik.com, @stokemaster on Twitter, and Stokemaster on Facebook.

American Biker

Here is another great use of Qik.

Tracy, aka American_Biker, has mounted his Droid X on the handlebars of his motorcycle in a specially made, waterproof case. With this he is running Qik and recording live from the road on his biker journeys around the US, getting some great shots of life on the highway and different biker meets.

He has thus far been to the Sturgis Bike Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota and is currently in Michigan. In a few days he will be heading to the Detroit area to attend “Woodward Dream Cruise”.

“They usually have around 1,000,000 people show up for the weekend. There’s all kinds of cool cars. Hot rods, muscle cars, you name it. It’s quite spectacular event,” Tracy says.

Marriage proposal shared live on Qik

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Here’s a great example of sharing life moments as they happen, wherever they happen, via Qik.

Matt Van Horn caught his girlfriend by surprise at their favorite scenic spot on top of Bernal Hill in San Francisco, got down on one knee and proposed.  An hour before doing it, he emailed her family and his so they could watch the moment live on Qik.

Here’s what Matt has to say:   “As I was hiding behind the rock after she was lured to the hill, I sent out a foursquare check-in which sent out a tweet which she would see on her phone that said that I was proposing to the woman of my dreams and that she should turn around.  In that tweet I had the Qik link so any person who followed me on twitter/foursquare/facebook could watch it happen live!  Qik worked perfectly as well.”

Congratulations Matt and Lauren!

We loved hearing about this use of  Qik because it’s clearly a moment you both want to share live but also have recorded so you can save it forever.

Qik iOS4 updates are now available

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Qik Video Camera updates for iOS4 have been approved by Apple and are now available in the app store!

As an existing Qik Video Camera user you should be prompted to download the new app for free.

If you search for Qik and see two different versions, here’s what that is about:

  • Qik Video Camera Pro is the update most people will get.  It’s also the right choice for new users.  It’s got a nice low price of $2.99 for new users, free for existing users.  This update will eliminate blue tint issues that all video apps have been experiencing with iOS4.
  • The other app is called Original Qik Video Camera Update for iOS4.  This is for Qikkers who first downloaded Qik before March 2010 and are still using Qik Video Camera version 4.5. Although the update is absolutely FREE for current version 4.5 users, we put a crazy high price of $119.99 because we want to discourage new users from downloading it.  It’s an update that a group of loyal Qikkers have been waiting for to clear up some compatibility problems with iOS4.

Both updates make it super convenient to capture and share your life right as it happens, wherever you might be.  Here are some of the features:

  • Smoother videos - more frames per second with iOS4
  • Video Share -  Right as you are recoding, videos are uploaded to your personal page on qik.com and can be shared with anyone you like from there via Facebook, Twitter, SMS, email, your blog and more.  (If you don’t want to do this, you have the option to turn live sharing off.)
  • No limits on video length.
  • Zoom and pause controls while recording videos.
  • Photo Capture – Freeze  precious moments by snapping a photo right as you are recording videos.
  • Photo Mix – This cool effect lets you start with a picture and then erase parts of the picture to reveal the video.
