The update for Qik for iPhone 3GS that we submitted has now been approved by Apple. With the new app from the App Store (version 3.98), you can now record videos and then upload and share them over both wifi and via the cell network.

So, give this version a try and let us know what you think by rating the application. As always, you can also email us at support@qik.com with your feedback, too.

As you may have noticed, we’ve made some updates to the qik.com website. Highlights include:

Sign in to Qik, or sign up for Qik, using Twitter Connect:
All Twitter lovers out there can now join Qik using their Twitter account. And existing Qik users can use Twitter Connect to Sign In to Qik and also set up their Twitter preferences from the Edit Networks page using Twitter Connect.

View comments posted on Facebook on your Qik videos on qik.com:
After you have posted your Qik videos to Facebook and your friends on Facebook comment on these videos, those comments will now also show up in your video comments on qik.com. David Usher using Qik on stage!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

At the recent Le Festival d’été de Beloeil in Beloeil, Quebec, I was excited to find one of the most interesting use cases for Qik. David Usher, who was the first act of the night, took out his phone and streamed video with Qik, from the stage, bringing his perspective of the concert to his many fans around the world. David has also used Qik’s integrations with sites like YouTube, enabling him to automatically share his Qik videos in several places at once.

Recently, David downloaded the latest Qik application from the App Store for his iPhone 3GS. I hope we will be seeing more Qiks from you, David!

And if you have an iPhone 3GS, feel free to download the Qik app from the App Store. Check out our blog post on Qik for iPhone 3GS here. Last but not least, do let us know your experience with the app and remember to rate the application. =)

Here’s David in action with Qik, on stage:

Qik for iPhone 3GS – now live and free from the App Store!

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

You’ve been asking for it, and now it’s here: Qik for the iPhone 3GS can now be downloaded – for free! – directly from the App Store.

If you already have Qik on your iPhone, you should know that this version is a little different. Here’s how.

Upload videos from your iPhone’s Camera Roll

First, this version of Qik allows you to pull videos right from your iPhone 3GS Camera Roll and upload them to your Qik account. So if you’ve recorded videos with the iPhone 3GS native camera, you can share those via Qik, too. Qik is the only iPhone 3GS app to let you share videos from your camera roll straight to your blog, website, Facebook, YouTube, and all the other networks Qik integrates with.

Automatic uploading

Once you’ve stopped recording, your video upload begins automatically – without the hassle of pushing any more buttons or filling out any form fields.

Shoot video in portrait or landscape mode

Qik is the first mobile video app to let you frame your videos either horizontally or vertically. w00t!

Location sharing while uploading video

Finally, Qik is the only iPhone 3GS mobile video app that lets you share your location while streaming video from your phone. So if you’re partying downtown, you don’t need to give your friends any address or directions – they can just check out the location information from your Qik stream to see where you are and join in the fun. (Of course, if you really don’t want them crashing the party, you can turn off the location sharing feature. :) )

NOTE: For now, this is a capture and upload app – not the low latency live video you’ve become used to with Qik. Qik for iPhone 3GS works over both wifi and the cell network.

It’s easy, it’s free, and it’s now on the App Store: Qik for iPhone 3GS. Check it out now, and please let us know how you like it by rating the app when you’ve had your fun. Happy Qikking!

Planned maintenance tonight

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Qik will be down tonight, August 11, from 10.30PM – 1.30AM Pacific Standard Time for planned maintenance. During these three hours, you will not be able to Qik live, but you can still record your Qiks in offline mode – they will upload to Qik as soon as we’re back up and you’re connected.

We try to keep downtime to a minimum, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. In this case, we will be upgrading our infrastructure so that you’ll have an even better experience the next time you Qik. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused during this period.

Qik for Android update – on-device video editing, Speed Sharing, and more!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

We were really encouraged by the positive feedback from the first alpha release of Qik for Android phones. (So was Google, apparently, as today we are a featured app in the Android Market. w00t!) So we’re curious to see how much you guys like the latest version, with several new features that we think are pretty sweet. Check out the demo video here, and read below for full details.

Sharing has become a lot more personal and intuitive in this
version through the Qik Speed Sharing bar.

Qik for Android - Speed Sharing

The Qik Speed Sharing bar makes it fast and easy to let friends know you’re live or send a recorded video.

You can now create shortcuts to select friends or family
members from your phone contact list and place those shortcuts on the
Speed Sharing bar that appears in the bottom of the screen. These can
be either SMS or email contact details. The text messages are sent through Qik servers, saving you any possible charges from your mobile provider on SMS. The Speed Sharing area also displays those networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, for which the user has enabled sharing.

To add these shortcuts press Menu > Settings > Sharing >
Shortcuts or press Share and add from the Speed Sharing bar.

On-device video editing comes to Qik on Android!
You can capture videos offline, trim them, and then share as usual.

First, adjust the Qik settings so that you are recording offline. After you’ve finished Qikking in offline mode, press the video thumbnail that appears in the bottom left corner. This plays back the footage you just captured. Press the Trim button and you’ll see markers appear at either end of the screen. By moving those markers, you can select the start and end points of your Qik video. You can even play back the video to make sure you’re happy with your selection. Press “Done” to finish editing. When you’re back online, the video will automatically upload to your Qik account.

Update March, 2010: The latest client 1.0.89 does not have the ability to trim the video. We will be looking to bring this back in an upcoming release.

Plus:

* Link your Twitter account and enter your default Twitter message directly from the phone.

* From the Qik app on the phone you can now also choose whether to send all your videos to Facebook automatically or not.

So…what do you think? Let us know in the comments, on Twitter, or by sending an email to android@qik.com. We’d love to know your thoughts!
