Qik: The first live mobile streaming service to integrate with 12seconds!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

We’re very happy today to announce that Qik is the first live mobile streaming service to integrate with popular micro-video site 12seconds (aka “video Twitter”).

That’s right: As of today, Qikkers who are also 12seconds users can now link their accounts for each service.

To integrate 12seconds with your Qik account, go to the Edit Profile page on Qik, then click “Edit this account” next to the 12seconds logo. Just enter your 12seconds credentials on the next page. Once saved, the first twelve seconds of every Qik you do will go to your 12seconds account, too! Below, Qik’s Michael Forston shows you how to do this – by Qikking to his 12seconds account!

This integration means that 12seconds users now have the option of getting their videos to 12seconds from the dozens and dozens of handsets which Qik supports. We’re really pleased to offer 12seconds’ growing user base so many more options for streaming to their accounts. Happy Qikking…for twelve seconds and beyond!

Qik on BlackBerry Curve 8330: Update

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

First, thank you very much to all of our users who have sent us their log files and supplied us with other information about their use of Qik on the BlackBerry Curve 8330. You guys gave us important data that helped us to figure out what was causing some 8330 users problems with Qikking.

It now seems that whether or not you have this issue depends upon which version of the BlackBerry operating system you are using. This applies both to 8130 and 8330 BlackBerry handsets (two CDMA phones).

Carriers Verizon and Spring have only officially released BlackBerry OS version 4.3; Qik works with no problems on this operating system. However, if you have upgraded to the unofficial 4.5 release of the BlackBerry operating system on either the 8330 or 8130, Qik will not work as it should. (Please note that this goes not only for Verizon and Sprint, but other CDMA networks.)

We are working to resolve this discrepancy between operating systems so that those BlackBerry 8130 and 8330 owners who have upgraded their OSs to the unofficial 4.5 release may use Qik as easily as those who are still running 4.3. We really appreciate users’ patience while we deal with this and work to get you Qikking as soon as possible.

Again, our deepest thanks to users who have sent us their log files and other data to help us figure out what was at the root of this issue. We’re disappointed whenever any user has a problem Qikking, but we’re very glad to have such patient, understanding, and helpful users who really do contribute so much to helping us release better products.

Watch this space for updates as we progress this issue. Thanks!

Celebrate Halloween with Qik – live and in person!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

We were talking in the office the other day about what to do for Halloween; it’s the first one for Qik, and we want to make it memorable. This is especially true for our interns from Singapore – Jane, Audrey, Minxuan and Wayne – who have never experienced Halloween.

One thing we know for sure is that you guys will be Qikking some very cool stuff: haunted houses, costumes, parties, and who knows what other kind of scary goodness. So we thought we’d offer up some prizes for the best Halloween Qiks. We’ve got Qik swag and some other surprises in store for the most entertaining and engaging Halloween Qiks.

To submit your best Qik Halloween videos for consideration, just tag them with qik_halloween08 – and you can check out your competition here.

Finally, we’d like to invite Qik users in the Bay Area to stop by our office on Friday afternoon from 4PM (PST) onward. We’re going to have tons of Halloween candy, an apple bobbing contest (yes!), and more surprises.

We’re at 811 Hamilton Street in Redwood City if you want to stop by from 4PM (PST) onward on Friday. Hope to Qik you there!

BlackBerry Curve 8330 on Qik

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Guys, wanted to bring you up to speed on what’s happening with our alpha release of Qik on BlackBerry Curve 8330.

We have many new Qik users streaming successfully from their 8330s. At the same time, we also have many users who are experiencing problems with the 8330 – problems not being experienced on other BlackBerry handsets. As this as an alpha release, fixing bugs is part of the process, and we want to get this one sorted ASAP.

If you are an 8330 user who is having problems Qikking on your handset, we would very much appreciate your help in figuring out what the problem is. If you could email blackberry@qik.com with your Qik log file and your username, you will help us a lot with getting this bug fixed.

To retrieve the log file from your BlackBerry device, go to SDCard/Blackberry/Qiklog.txt – this is the file we need. Please email blackberry@qik.com with this Qik log file and your username.

We’re sorry for those 8330 users who are having these problems. We hope to have this fixed before the weekend. In the meantime, thank you so much for your help and understanding of the alpha release process!

Qik now live with alpha release client for BlackBerry

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

One of the most frequent requests we’ve had from Qik fans has been for a BlackBerry client. Today we are really excited to announce our alpha release clients for the BlackBerry Pearl 8120, BlackBerry Pearl 8130, and BlackBerry Bold. BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 will follow soon.

UPDATE: We just got it running on Blackberry Curve 8320 (GSM only) and 8330. So, alpha opens up on these devices as well.

New to Qik? Join Qik and download the app by going to qik.com/sign_up.

Already a Qikker? On your BlackBerry, go to qik.com/dl/165 and download the file onto your device. Then after you start the app the first time, sign In with your existing Qik username and password to start streaming to your profile on Qik.

How is the alpha release of Qik different?
In this alpha release, Qik on BlackBerry works a bit differently than the other devices.
- When you start Qik, a screen is shown with just one button – Stream. Press the center button to    start streaming. This will bring up the camera application and you’ll be off streaming live to the    web. When you are ready to stop, just press the center button again.
- Depending on the network condition, after you press stop, you may see a progress % on the top    right hand corner indicating the video that is left to be sent. It is advised to wait for the stream    to be completely uploaded prior to streaming again.
- In this version, the chat does not show up overlayed on the camera.
- For best performance, use BlackBerry OS 4.5 and above.
- Your BlackBerry should have a SD card and video capture should be set to the directory:    SDCard/Blackberry/Videos.
- The video capturing mode should not be set to the MMS mode.
- Make sure that the TCP setting is set correctly as per the operator. For more information check    here.

Qik at the California Women’s Conference 2008

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The Women’s Conference 2008 held annually in Long Beach, California, is the most dynamic gathering of 14,000 women from all parts of United States!

The stories and experiences shared by notable women, Maria Shriver, First Lady of California, Condoleezza Rice, United States Secretary of State, Cherie Blair, wife of Britain’s former Prime Minister Tony Blair, fashion icon Heidi Klum were among the many internationally acclaimed women present at the conference. Where on earth would you find a stage filled with acclaimed superstars like Warrant Buffett, Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum?

Being a privileged participant of the Minerva Leaders Program, among the arena of 14,000 women present, Minxuan and myself were given the golden opportunity to be a part of the conference. We attended the Breakout sessions and were tremendously inspired by what these women stood for and how their lives were shaped by deeds and not simply words.

We were both exposed to the world of these successful women and realized that their struggles in life stood no different from what an average woman faced. The familiarity of their struggles created a sense of assurance among many of us. Also, believing that what we want to achieve in life, is never too far a goal to reach.

It’s a callout to the world that women’s talents are not new to capability but are new to recognition.

Maria Shriver shares her theme for this year, “Be Who You Are!”

Bono, U2 shares his drive for alleviating the poverty and plight for the children in Africa. We can make a difference!

For a comprehensive view of all the other videos of the conference, check out this page on Qik.

Another BBC experiment on Qik

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Right now, the two biggest stories out there are the US presidential election and the global economic climate. We’ve already teamed up with the BBC for three experiments to see what Qikkers are thinking about the former. Now it’s time to see what you have to say about the latter.

Friday has been cheerfully anointed Downturn Day, and the BBC is curious to hear from you about what is happening in the world economy – and closer to home. Have you been affected by what is happening in the markets? Have you noticed fewer people shopping at the mall? Or are you avoiding the mall yourself? Do you think the negative tenor of press coverage is feeding into any downturn?

Whatever your take on things, the BBC would love to hear it. Join the Global recession – how bad can it get? event on Qik to voice your views. The BBC will feature selected contributions on their website, and perhaps on television.

No matter where you are, this is your chance to reach a global audience about a worldwide condition. Join the BBC event and have your say!
