Qik at SXSW – vote now!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

SXSW is one of the major annual events in our world of web and entertainment – if you haven’t been to Austin for the fun, you’ve no doubt heard all about it.

We’re going to be at SXSW next year, and is excited about two proposed panels which would feature Qik. If you’ve registered with the SXSW site in order to vote on panels, you can also vote for these, too. All it takes is one click!

Our proposed panels are:

Too Much Lifecasting: Do You Want to Watch Me Pee?Bored at work, you stumble across your friend’s video feed. He’s obviously forgotten his camera is on and breaks into a horrible rendition of “Eye of the Tiger.” After five minutes, and the addition of 5 curious co-workers one of them wonders out loud, “Why are we watching this?” Good Question. VOTE HERE

Tinkerers Unite: Let Me Show You How it WorksMemorable moments growing up: loosing your first tooth, your first kiss, and the first time you smashed your R/C controller just to see how it worked. On this panel, notably curious individuals discuss our natural urges to tinker and fix, often with unsuspecting results. VOTE HERE

The deadline for voting is this Friday, August 29. See you all in Austin!

iPhone app updated!

Monday, August 25th, 2008

iPhone users can now update to 0.3.10. Changes in this release:

Changes:

  1. - video quality and fps improvements
  2. - mute / private / send alert (twitter) buttons enabled in Qik menu
  3. - buffering support in poor network conditions (NOTE: do not exit Qik until buffer is empty)
  4. - connection status indicator

Known issues:

  1. - occasionally a small buffer will appear to remain even after emptying the buffer; this can be ignored
  2. - if the phone sleeps while emptying the buffer and is woken up before it is finished sending, the application might terminate and lose the remaining data in the buffer

Get it by checking Cydia or Installer for updates — let us know what you think!

Democratic National Convention widget from Qik + Newsgator

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Want to keep up on all the behind the scenes action from the Democratic National Convention in Denver? Qik is really excited to offer two ways of doing just that:

1) Check out the DNC event page, which will display videos from users on the ground in Denver.

2) Embed the Qik/Newsgator DNC widget on your blog or website. This widget will show videos pulled straight from the DNC event page, and will automatically re-size to fit your sidebar or blog post. This is what it looks like:

Just click the “Get This” button on the widget to grab the embed code for your own blog or website.

Newsgator has some other neat activities happening around the DNC, including their sponsorship of the Big Tent, a 9,000-square foot new media center and blogger base in Denver. You can also check out their Big Tent widget, which consolidates feeds from nearly 200 DNC bloggers. Very cool work, Newsgator!

Prime Minister of Singapore in Action with Qik

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong in the National Day Rally 2008 was seen in action showcasing Qik to an enthralled audience. During the demonstration everyone in the room applauded when they saw themselves live on the Prime Minister Office’s website from his cell phone.

Rather than an ordinary National Day Rally, the Prime Minister of Singapore called this the Multi-Media Super Show. During this rally, the Prime Minister talked about engagement with citizens and pushing for participation through mediums like Qik.

This news also hit the Straits Times at Singapore. To quote:
BETTER ENGAGEMENT. PAP welcomes the liberalisation announced by the Prime Minister. This will increase the opportunities for Singaporeans to give their views and allow political parties to better engage cyber-citizens. PAP will operate responsibly within the new and expanded boundaries to inform, educate and reach out to younger voters through various platforms. Overall, our goal is to create a conducive environment, whether online or within the general public, for political issues to be discussed seriously and productively, to help find solutions for challenges that Singapore faces.”

Here’s the article on Straits Times titled “Yes to factual footage”.

Dip into Qik

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

You guys come up with so many good videos on a daily basis – often, we’ll email one another at Qik HQ with links to particularly fun ones. Tonight, one came through from our Michael (@michaelf) that really made me smile: a tribute to Qik using cans of Skol (“dip” – aka chewing tobacco). Qikker dmb41302, Ian Miller, has a great imagination. Thanks, Ian!

Singapore Prime Minister showcasing Qik in a TV broadcast

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

On 17 August at 7pm Singapore Time (4am PST, 7am EST), the Prime Minister of Singapore, LEE Hsien Loong, will be using Qik and streaming video live from his cell phone that will be broadcasted straight to television. This can be watched live on qik.com/ndr2008 and qik.com/ndr_2008.

Who would have thought that a chance meeting back in August 2007 with Alvin Lai, a student from National University Singapore (NUS), then also studying at Stanford as a part of the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program would eventually lead to this. Back in August 2007, I met Alvin through Facebook and met up for coffee at the Starbucks in Sunnyvale, CA. It was an instant connection – a sharp, smart, entrepreneurial web developer, who believed in our vision of Qik. In matter of months he became an extended part of the Qik team, our very first 1st pre-alpha tester and getting his friends involved in testing Qik. He also introduced us to the NOC program through which we had the pleasure to hire a few interns as well. Fast forward August 2008 – we now have the Prime Minister of Singapore talking about Qik and broadcasting it straight to TV. Who would have ever thought a chance meeting through Facebook would lead to something like this.
