Web 2.0 Expo: happenings and parties we’ll be at.

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

The past weekend was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to a great week ahead at the Web 2.0 Expo here in San Francisco. Not coming to the event? Watch it live at qik.com/web2

The weekend leading up to this event was a blast. There are 20 great startups visiting San Francisco from UK as a part of Web Mission 2008. Got a chance to hang around with them for a bit. The Qik below is Mike Butcher from TechCrunch UK interviewing Mark from TechCrunch US.

On Sunday, we got the opportunity to hang around with the movers-and-shakers at a brunch organized by Susan MacTavish Best and Jim Buckmaster followed by a BBQ organized by Brian Solis and Stephanie Agresta.

You know Web 2.0 is in the air, when you see all the cool 2.0 events happening everywhere. The first one called Love 2.0 – the dating experience at Web 2.0 Expo –
was organized by Stephanie Agresta and Engage. Well we had Qikkers Paul Walsh and Kimberly Larsen at this event.

Apart from being at the Expo, here are some of the parties we’ll be at.

In San Francisco? Join us at these events OR watch us live at qik.com/web2

Qik at the Congress of Deputies in Spain

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Spanish elections took place in March and the new Prime Minister has recently been confirmed. There were two parliamentary ballots since he failed to win enough MPs’ votes in the first round.

Two Deputies, Carles Campuzano and Jordi Xucla were there qikking snippets from both sessions at the Congress of Deputies, the lower house, in Madrid.

…Which seemed to create a bit of a stir with the Spanish media – not least because they are not allowed to film in the Congress during sessions. So they were quick to report what had happened.

Despite the hostility implied by the headlines, politicians from the various parties seem to get along rather well. At least in front of the camera.

Who needs CNN when you’ve got Qik installed?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Sacramento Bee uses Qik to stream video of Olympics Torch protests

Friday, April 11th, 2008

“By using Qik, a technology that allows live streaming from videophones to a flash player embedded on a website or blog, reporters were able broadcast moving images as events unfolded – effectively replicating a live TV news service at a fraction of the cost and with the flexibility to move freely and quickly.” said Journalism.co.uk. More..

What was really innovative in this approach was that reporter Manny Christomo mounted the mobile phone on his DV camera to capture both the live footage as well the recorded footage.

“Our goal is to try and create an immediacy for our online video, it’s [using Qik] experimental, we have been using it for just the last two weeks,” Mark Morris, the Bee’s director of multimedia, told Journalism.co.uk.

After the completion of the live Qik feed they downloaded the content and made it available from their own video site.

“We see it as a way of posting editorial content immediately online, I think we had something posted on our site within 15 minutes of everything being transmitted into Qik.”
, said Mark Morris.

With this 2 local newspapers Fresno Bee and Sacramento Bee are using Qik for reporting local news.
