Qik mentioned in Wall Street Journal

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Wall Street Journal reported on how cell phones are getting lot smarter. In the report titled “Coming Soon to a Phone Near You: Your cellphone is about to get a lot smarter. Here’s what to expect in the months ahead.” Qik was featured as the application for sending videos from cell phones. The article can be found here.

To quote:

&quotSending Video

A bunch of services let you stream live video footage from your phone to a computer over the Internet, so you can share live images of, say, a concert or a scenic vista. Now one of those services — Visivo Communications Inc.’s Qik of Foster City, Calif. — is also working on technology that lets you send that live feed to someone else’s phone.

The service will work on any video-capable phone, but anyone who wants to stream the video has to download a small application. Qik does a number of behind-the-scenes tricks to make the service work more smoothly. To improve the playback quality — particularly in areas with slow wireless connections — Qik’s servers process the footage before sending it along.&quot

Qik is also highlighted in the video below:

Qik Graffiti at Oslo, Norway

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008
Qikker Shaun Thanki amazed us this morning with one of the greatest stunt we have seen on Qik. He made a graffiti of qik.com on the wall of the restaurant he is looking to open. As he was doing this – the first thing that came to mind was “cool” and then “is this legal?”. Mr. Thanki though had it all covered – and had taken all the necessary permissions so that he could do this. Shaun not only did we enjoy watching this – but were totally touched by your passion for Qik. The graffiti art was done by Acrobato.

Qik – get your streams to YouTube Automatically

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

We are pleased to announce an integration with YouTube. Starting now – you can get your Qiks to your YouTube channel automatically after you complete your stream.

All it requires is a simple one-time setup:

  • Login to qik.com and click “Edit Profile”.
  • Click the “Networks” tab near the top.
  • Click “Edit this account” beside the YouTube image and validate your YouTube login.
  • If you want your videos to automatically go to YouTube after completion of the stream, select the checkbox “Send all videos”.

Done! Next time you Qik, your videos will show up automatically on YouTube right after.

Don’t want your videos to go to YouTube automatically?
No worries you can always do it one at a time as shown below:

Things to be aware of:

  • It may take some time for the Qik to show up on YouTube. This is dependent on the processing time taken by YouTube. Impatient? Visit http://www.youtube.com/my_videos to see if your Qik was queued up for upload.
  • Due to the 10 minute video length imposed by YouTube, videos of longer duration are not be uploaded.

Keeping with the mantra of being able to stream video from your cell phone to the world – with this integration, Qikkers can now stream to YouTube, Mogulus, Seesmic, Mobuzz, and all your blogs and websites – automatically just by pressing “Stream” on your cell phone!
